Christian Dost winner of the Virtual OSTAR
Christian Dost, virtual skipper of the boat named brainaid is the winner of the Virtual OSTAR prize and has taken line honours in the virtual race crossing the finish line first in 18d 7h 11m.
Christian, originally from Germany but who lives in Belgium has generously declined to collect his prize and asked for the sum to be given to the Institute of Cancer Research.
This is Christian's comment:
In the virtual race I passed 80 miles north of Virgin Rocks beating eastward the day before in SW-erly winds. A slight shift to WSW had me tack and start the long way south. Still north of the gale it gave a good push with NE-erly strong winds (we do not have gusts in our virtual winds, so this is all very controlled). My route went somewhat along the shelf ridge in mixed weather with lots of calms. I've been chased by boats north of me at the same longitude and had a few east of me at the same latitude, it was very delicate to find the fastest track.
About 3 to 2 days away from Newport things stabilized for me and I was constantly 2 hours ahead of my closest pursuers.
All in all this was a great race, demanding weather (I love to try to decode that) and really great to read the blogs of the real boat's skippers at the same time. Your website was a real gain for the Ostar, I believe.
